Explore life's greatest questions, then soak in one of earth's great landscapes.

This is a place that is dedicated to creating experiences you’ll never forget. With natural adobe-style architecture featuring native stone and earth-tone exteriors, it’s truly hard to see where Gateway Canyons ends and the beauty of its surroundings begin.

This oasis of comfort in the midst of canyon country was created specifically to meet the needs of Discovery Retreats participants while limiting the impact of humans in this unique environment through the use of green materials and practices, including geothermal energy and solar water heating.

Gateway Canyons is located on the Unaweep/Tabeguache Colorado Scenic Byway. This spectacular 133-mile long road runs around the Uncompahgre National Forest and along the Dolores River from Grand Junction, through Gateway and, finally, connects to Route 146 to Placerville.

Explore the landscape while kayaking, hiking, climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, snowshoeing, and more.

The Details

Region

Region:

A playground for all the many ways you play

“When I was a boy, I was captivated by my father’s old oil company maps of Colorado. That’s really where this journey began.” – John Hendricks

Gateway, Colorado is located one hour south and west of Grand Junction, at the confluence of the West Creek and Dolores River, and only a few meandering miles from the Utah border. Surrounded by the Uncompahgre Plateau, Piñon Mesa and La Sal Mountains, this quaint, tight-knit community is embraced by an impossibly beautiful landscape of sun-drenched canyon walls, cottonwoods and chameleon skies.

A drive through western Colorado is a journey through a magnificent history book—filled with chapters about dinosaurs, ancient peoples and mining dreams come and gone. And standing majestically above it all, the Palisade—a sheer red sandstone that watches over the Unaweep Canyon.

Board the luxurious Cessna Caravan and enjoy an eagle’s eye view of the fascinating geography and ancient cultural wonders of the area. ADVENTURE CENTER

River Adventures

How can we show you our world?

The Adventure Center offers daily Colorado kayaking trips on the Dolores River using Tomcat inflatable “duckies,” as well as sit-on-top, hard-shell kayaks, perfect for every level of boater.

Gather your group of four or more and head to the Adventure Center for a bonding experience on the river with one of our unforgettable Colorado rafting trips. A half-day Colorado river-raft trip covers approximately six to ten river miles and can be customized as an easy float trip. Or choose to tackle Class III rapids along the Dolores with a more daring crew.

And nothing says “fun” on a Colorado vacation quite like grabbing an inner tube and hitting the creek for a daylong float, available during the summer season (April-October). And don’t forget to bring along some refreshments from the Outpost General Store – we’ve got tubes with coolers, too! Contact the Adventure Center for more information.

Hiking & Climbing Adventures

Whether heading out with a guide into the vast western landscape, climbing the Palisade or strolling the resort grounds, you’ll find a hiking, climbing or rappelling adventure to suit your interest. Self-guided hiking experiences are charted on adventure maps for guests who prefer a solo trek in the wilderness and backcountry. Expert-led tours are offered as half and full-day journeys into the surrounding canyons and high desert Ponderosa Pine forests. Contact the Adventure Center for more information.

Off Road Tours

Access the backcountry and explore the stunning landscape of Colorado on one of the area’s countless off-road ATV and Colorado Jeep trails. Rent one of our Jeeps and set out with our guides into the rugged wilderness landscape to historic mining sites. Guided tours on ATVs are also available. Contact the Adventure Center for more information.

Mountain Biking

Begin your day with a morning mountain bike tour. Offered every day, these thrilling rides test a variety of skill levels—all supported by our resort guides and adventure vehicles. Contact the Adventure Center for rentals and routes.

Fishing

Discover all that the wild, pristine rivers of remote western Colorado have to offer with our guided fly-fishing adventures. Take fly casting lessons with our expert instructors or let them take you to the secret spots that the fish call home. Contact the Adventure Center for more information.

Horseback Riding

Located in the heart of the majestic Unaweep Canyon, The Stables at Gateway Canyons provide an authentic introduction to your western horseback riding experience. We offer beginner-riding instruction, guided tours to the base of the Uncompahgre Plateau, and endless views, otherwise known as jaw-dropping horseback journeys. The Stables are available to all Gateway Canyons guests. Contact the Adventure Center to reserve your saddle.
